THE DEATH OF A SEASON

This blog is in official mourning over the death of our season.
In just two hectic weeks, a season that was looking so full of hope and joy
Where brilliance and finger-licking goodness
That brought hope and optimism
To countless fans of the beautiful game
Was denied its glory
By the pragmatism
Of the Ugly Win.
Rejoice then, O those of you who worship
The thugs of the physical game,
And the dullard coaches of the smash-and-grab wins.
Think not that ye shall prosper for ever more
For truly Style will never die,
And Beauty can never be denied.
Like Arnie of yore,
So is Arsene of present.
We'll be back.

Champions League, 1st knockout round, second leg
Arse 1
(Alex 58th og)
PSV Eindhoven 1
(Alex 81st)
Aggregate: Arsenal 1- 2 PSV Eindhoven
It was deja vu, a walk down memory lane, an encounter with a time slip.
For much of this game it was like watching our team play a team from the past. A team that grabbed opportunities by the scruff of their necks.
A team that bags its chances as ruthlessly as a poacher on a tight schedule.
It was like watching us play the famous George Graham's Arsenal, the team that mugged Liverpool at Anfield in '89 for the League title and suffocated Parma at Copenhagen in '94 for the Cup Winners Cup.
Roenald Koeman seems to be a Graham adherent, meshing his team tightly around powerhouse Alex, the Man of the Match.
Note: Alex is actually owned by Chelsea but has been playing for PSV on-loan since 2004, when he was brought out of Santos.
In the midfield battle between Alex and Baptista playing cover for Cesc, the Tank won hands down over the Beast.
In short, Koeman ground out the result they needed with the approach that Graham introduced to Arsenal in the past - which Arsene had gradually left behind with his cerebral sexy football.
The long injury list facing Arsene did not help him devise an effective way of dancing around the PSV strengths that he was well aware of.
In the end, he simply did not have enough options and resources for the team to cope.
This was a victory for pragmatism, for brute power over swashbuckling finesse.
Truly our season now lies in ashes.
